Are Sports Stars Good Role Models for the Youth of Today?
Fame, fortune, red carpet appearances, money, bling, modelling contracts, merchandising, celebrity, paparazzi, fast cars. What am I talking about? Sports stars - BUT - can they be good role models for the youth of today too?
First of all they serve as an inspiration to young people. They give children goals to achieve. They also teach the importance of hard work and never giving up. These values don’t just apply to sports but also teach the importance of hard work for anything we want to do well and succeed in.
Successful basketball player Derrick Rose (born 1988) was raised by a single a single mother in Englewood, one of the toughest parts of Chicago. He was the youngest of four boys. Rose’s older brothers were all good basketball players and fans of the Chicago Bulls, the team that Rose would later play for. Derrick followed their lead.
Michael Jordan was also a great role model for Rose. Rose had to overcome the struggle of where he was living, a place where about two people are killed each day. “ When I was younger I used to cry about how rough it was...I just wanted to be old enough to get me and my family out of there.”
Rose has inspired countless people that are in the same situation as him. In 2011 Rose teamed up with his sponsors to refurbish the Murray Park basketball courts, which leads me to my next point.
Sports stars are philanthropists. Successful athletes donate their time and money to many important causes. This teaches children the importance of generosity. It shows that it is possible to be ambitious and drive and still compassionate and selfless.
In 2015 Cristiano Ronaldo was named the “most charitable athlete”. He has donated millions to charities and paid the medical bills of a number of terminally ill children. During the 2016 Euros Ronaldo got lines cut in his hair in acknowledgement of two scars left by an operation on a young fan which he paid for.
Another reason why sports stars are great role models is because they encourage children to be healthy. Children who look up to sports stars are more likely to participate in sporting activities and therefore they are more likely to participate in sporting activities and therefore more likely to lead a healthy lifestyle.
Sports stars face many challenges on their journey to success. They are able to overcome the challenges. They do not give up when they are faced with failure. This is an inspiration for young people who may otherwise quit when they meet failure. Young people can see that there is value in being resilient and that failure is an inevitable part of the journey to success.
In conclusion, sports stars embody hard work, dedication, skill and pure commitment. I believe they that the youth of today can learn a lot from sports stars for their own lives in whatever they choose to do, and for this reason they are great role models.
